Gateway: a setting and system modification

There was once a great empire that ruled over the known world. The Empire was founded on large island called Lycia. 

The rule of the empire was decadent in their wealthy homeland but brutal and crushing in their colonies. Eventually after a thousand years, there was an assassination of a sitting Empress, followed by war. 

The War consumed the colonies and the homeland. In the homeland factions squared off and wizards tapped into dark forbidden magics to defeat their enemies. These wild arcane battles soon grew out of hand and assumed a life of their own.  And the Island was cloaked in a Raging Storm for hundreds of years.

It was nine months ago the Storm Wall ceased to rage. Lycia was again accessible. Early explorers scouting the coast, found it battered and beaten, searches found many ruined cities from the days of the Empire, as well as more recent ruins. They also encountered monstrous abominations, beast men, demonic creatures, and even those who have lived beyond death. They also found lost treasures, relics, gold, silver , and arcane items of importance.

 Thus began the resettlement of Lycia, now called the Land that Was. While the vast majority of people in the colonies face tough brutal hopeless lives, and a few live in delusion day dreams, protected from reality by wealth and high keep walls, there is a third group, those that are not hopeless or blind, but opportunistic. They are the ones seeking to explore this new old land. This game focuses on stories of this foolish eager and desperate lot.

GATEWAY

On the north western coast of the Land that Was lies one of the new settlements formed by those seeking to find some opportunities in the new old world..  

This settlement Is called Gateway, built among the limited ruins of a fishing village. The Tents have been up and the town growing for around 6 months.

The population is around 45. Stories in the game will involve efforts by the residents of Gateway to carve out a new life of safety and security, away from the control and law of the kingdoms who are establishing settlements in the larger ruined coastal cities.
